Chapter 25

Gabriel and I walked through the door with a weight dragging against us. I was not ready to have the conversation that was coming. The possibility that my best friend and her father had been replaced by demons had my mind racing with panic and worry.

“Guys!” Gabriel called as we went deeper into the house. “We’ve got a problem.”

Before we could explain the situation, I saw four sets of eyes looking at us. William, Destiny, and Miss Gradilla were there as expected but they were joined by someone both familiar and completely unexpected.

“Justice!” she jumped up from her seat and wrapped her arms around me. She had a brown duffle bag draped over her shoulder. I felt something hard as the heavy bag hit my leg.

“Magnolia?” I said. “What are you doing here?” She wore a black crop-top and a pair of dark jeans. Her long dreads were in a beehive-shaped dome on her head.

“I wanted to lend a hand,” she said, sounding chipper. “Knowing everything that’s going on, I couldn’t just go on like everything was normal. I tried to help my parents, but they refused to let me do anything. They treat me like a child sometimes! So, I just decided to come here and see what I could do. I mean, you guys aren’t much older than me and you’re all doing such important work. I figured if there was anywhere that I could help, it would be here and if there was anyone who would let me help, it would be you guys.” She spoke so fast that I had to really concentrate to understand her through the combination of her rambling and her accent.

“Her parents don’t know she’s here,” William added with a glare through his glasses.

“There is also that,” she said with a nervous chuckle.

“Sounds like they wouldn’t agree with her being in the eye of the storm,” Miss Gradilla sighed.

“They wouldn’t! They don’t!” Magnolia sounded pained. “That’s why I’m here. I need to prove to them that I can handle things like this. I can be like them and you guys. I can help.”

“But, Magnolia, if your parents don’t want you involved...” I immediately heard my mother in my voice.

“Please.” She was teary-eyed. “Let me do this.”

“Justice,” Gabriel said as he placed a hand on my shoulder. I felt a warmth grow between his palm and my skin that got me back on track. “Maybe we should worry about this later. She might as well stay; we have more important things to go over.”

“That’s not really your call, son,” William said sternly.

“We think we found Raven,” I announced.

William drew in a sharp breath. “What?”

Miss Gradilla put a hand to her chest and fell into the nearest cushioned seat. Her brown face took on a red hue and she looked as though her mind was somewhere else.

“Raven and someone else he’s working with. His father, maybe,” Gabriel said.

“What makes you think this?” William asked me.

“My friend Hanna,” I began. “I tried to read her mind and I was forced out.
